Berlin, 31.01.2018. Counter-speech instead of hate speech: Facebook organised a challenge to create the most innovative campaign to react to hate, lies and agitation in social media. The winning team was our team of students of the MA in Marketing Communication and MA in Strategic Design programmes. The winners were awarded $10,000 during a ceremony in Washington D.C.

An objective, respectful exchange in social media hardly seems possible anymore. It is suppressed by hateful comments, lies and agitation. Facebook has announced that it will do better in the future. That's why the company sought the most innovative communication concept with the "Peer To Peer: Facebook Global Digital Challenge". The campaign "Don't be silent Berlin" was developed and implemented by MA students of the design akademie berlin.

"Each and every one of us is jointly responsible for what the digital debate looks like. We wanted to strengthen this awareness with various measures." says Hala Cherradi, student of the MA in Strategic Design programme.

The students of the design akademie berlin were selected after a thorough examination by EdVenture Partners and, after submitting the concept, provided measurable proof of a weekly report on the hits, links and comments of their measures. The measures include a guerrilla campaign, flyers, posters, cooperation with a refugee organisation and social media measures to raise awareness among the target group of 18-30 year-olds.

This was successful: Berliners prevailed in a group of 85 universities from all over the world! Together with three finalist teams from Brazil, Bangladesh and Lebanon, they presented and convinced Facebook management in Washington D.C. on January 30th. Their commitment was recognized twice: By Facebook, with $10,000 for first place. And with invitations to the German Embassy, the U.S. State Department Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

"We are very happy about this success. Our work is appreciated and this is a great incentive to continue. There is still a lot to do", says Prof. Katrin Androschin, Head of the MA in Strategic Design programme.

The state-accredited and private design akademie berlin, SRH Hochschule für Kommunikation und Design has been offering German and English BA and MA courses in the fields of communication and design at the innovative location in the Aufbau Haus in Berlin-Kreuzberg since 2007. The integration of practical projects, mobility phases, regular participation in competitions, close cooperation with project partners from science and industry, as well as, individual support up to and beyond the studies characterize us in particular. The SRH University Association is a strong network: The university is one of nine SRH universities with more than 12,000 students in Germany and abroad. It is owned by SRH Higher Education GmbH.
